If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and want to work or increase your earnings, Social Security's Ticket to Work program may be able to help.
Ticket to Work is a free, voluntary program for people ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security disability benefits. The program connects participants with approved service providers that can offer employment services and ongoing support as they work toward their career goals.
For people who rely on disability benefits, deciding to work more or pursue a better-paying job can also raise important questions: What will happen to my cash benefits? What about Medicare or Medicaid? What support is available if I need help finding or keeping a job?
You don't have to figure it out alone.
How Can Ticket to Work Help?
Ticket to Work connects you with approved service providers, called Employment Networks, that can help you work toward your employment goals.
Depending on the Employment Network you choose, services may include:
- exploring your employment and career goals;
- preparing a resume and getting ready for interviews;
- finding a new or better-paying job;
- understanding how work and earnings may affect your benefits;
- planning for career advancement;
- identifying workplace accommodations; and
- getting support to help you succeed and stay employed.
Services vary by Employment Network, so it's important to find a provider that offers the support you need.
Are You Eligible for Ticket to Work?
Social Security's Ticket to Work program is available to people ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) because of a disability. Participation is free and voluntary.
As an Employment Network, ERI can verify your eligibility and talk with you about whether its services are a good fit for your employment goals.
Sarah Carlson, a former Madison news anchor used Ticket to Work and ERI PLUS to return to her career after an epilepsy diagnosis. Our benefits specialists helped protect her SSDI and Medicare coverage along the way. "I was scared to death to take a leap out of the security of being on disability, but really anxious to get back on my feet and be back in the workplace," she says. "The Ticket to Work program was like an insurance and peace of mind for somebody who doesn't get a lot of that.""
