The Search for the Right Fit
Michael first connected with ERI through his Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) counselor. From the beginning, Danielle recognized Michael's unique abilities and worked alongside him for about a year and a half, seeking an employer who would value his contributions despite his visual impairment.
Prior to finding his current position, Michael had worked at Goodwill and another organization called Beyond Vision. However, neither placement proved to be the right environment for him to thrive.
A Breakthrough Opportunity
The turning point came unexpectedly during a statewide employment specialist meeting, where Danielle heard another colleague mention Mod Pizza and how accommodating they had been for a client with disabilities.
"That's when I was like, 'Oh, I'm calling Mod!'" Danielle says. She found a job opening for prep work on their website and arranged an interview for Michael. What happened next brought Danielle to tears. After explaining that Michael only wanted to work part-time and discussing his capabilities, the manager at Mod Pizza hired Michael on the spot.
Tools for Success
What made Mod Pizza particularly special was both the manager's immediate understanding and the staff's receptiveness to accommodations. Once employed, Michael received critical support that enabled him to perform his job effectively. DVR provided a talking scale that allowed him to accurately measure ingredients into containers—a simple but transformative tool.
More Than Accommodations: A Supportive Culture
Beyond the accommodations, Mod Pizza's inclusive culture has embraced Michael completely. "Those people are unbelievably supportive of him," Danielle emphasizes. "They would help him walk out to the van and provide assistance whenever needed. I'm not sure if I've ever witnessed such supportive work environment ... they are truly a remarkable."
This supportive atmosphere is exactly what Michael needed to succeed. After two years at Mod Pizza, he speaks enthusiastically about the positive changes he's experienced and how much he enjoys the atmosphere and his coworkers. "People are good," he notes simply but meaningfully.
Finding Purpose and Belonging
Michael brings many strengths to his workplace. He's dedicated, appreciative, and has developed important workplace skills through the support of his employment specialist and accommodating employer. Through his employment, Michael has gained not just a paycheck, but a sense of purpose and belonging.
Working with both Danielle and Stephanie Drum from ERI, Michael received the support he needed to navigate the employment process and find the right fit. His gratitude is evident when he speaks about his experience. "Tell their boss they were fantastic to work with!" he shares, highlighting the positive impact they've had on his journey.
Inspiring Others Through His Journey
Perhaps most telling about Michael's transformation is his desire to see his story help others facing similar challenges. "I hope you get this story out to help more people like me," he said—a testament to how meaningful his employment journey has been.
Through the dedicated efforts of organizations like ERI, people like Michael can find meaningful employment that values their unique contributions and provides a sense of purpose and belonging. By working closely with employers like Mod Pizza who recognize potential in every individual, ERI creates pathways to independence and fulfillment that extend far beyond the workplace.
