Hiring people with disabilities supports broad workforce and business goals. In a 2023 analysis of 346 U.S. companies, those that identified as disability hiring leaders reported 1.6 times more revenue and 2.6 times more net income than other companies included in the analysis.
Wisconsin employers can improve disability hiring and retention by making recruiting and application processes accessible, preparing managers to respond appropriately to accommodation needs, addressing workplace barriers early, and connecting employees with specialized resources when disability or public benefits affect their ability to work.
Employment Resources, Inc. (ERI) helps Wisconsin employers put these practices into action.
For more than 35 years, ERI has worked in disability employment, benefits counseling, workforce development, accessibility, and employment support. We use that experience to help employers recruit and retain workers with disabilities, respond to disability-related workplace challenges, improve accessibility, and connect employees with specialized resources when benefits such as Social Security or Medicaid affect decisions about working.
Here are some questions employers often ask us. We help them explore these questions and identify strategies and resources that fit their workforce.
5 Steps Employers Can Take Now
Review your hiring process for accessibility. Look at job descriptions, applications, interviews and onboarding.
Prepare managers to respond to disability-related concerns. Managers should know how to recognize when an accommodation conversation may be needed.
Address workplace barriers early. Don't wait until a challenge becomes a retention problem.
Know where to refer employees for benefits questions. Changes in hours or earnings can affect Social Security, Medicaid and other benefits.
Build relationships with disability employment resources. Community partners can help with recruitment, accommodations, training and employee support.
