It’s tax time again. It’s good to know that you may need to pay taxes on your Social Security benefits. Social security benefits include monthly retirement, survivor and disability benefits. They don't include supplemental security income (SSI) payments, which aren't taxable.
You may be required to pay taxes in certain circumstances. Some examples include when you have income from other sources, such as dividends or tax-exempt interest. Or you may pay taxes based on your spouses earned income.
If you are not sure, the IRS has created a form with questions to determine if your social security income is taxable.
If you are unsure of how to file a tax return or need other assistance, there are resources to help you.
First, it’s important to know when tax filing deadlines are so you do not face penalties for missing them.
The filing deadline to submit 2021 tax returns or an extension to file and pay tax owed is Monday, April 18, 2022, for most taxpayers.
Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, October 17, 2022, to file. If you haven’t filed your taxes already, you still have time to get free tax preparation help.
